Dear GATE Students and Parents,

Welcome to the GATE program at C. K. Price Middle School. We now have three Honors Core classes in place for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. We are also accelerating a few very capable students in mathematics classes. The classes meet the academic needs of our students and helped us earn a three-year approval for our GATE program in Orland. We will continue to have a limited number of afternoon enrichment classes at C.K. We are also planning some field trips and ½ day classes for GATE students.

I plan on meeting with interested GATE students on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 - 3:30 for some critical thinking, engineering projects, art projects, and game time. Our first on-campus GATE student meeting will be Tuesday, September 21, in Room 5. We will discuss upcoming field trips and activities. All C.K. GATE students are welcome to attend these sessions. I have some presenters who will be working with us throughout the school year.

I am planning two field trips and two ½ day classes. Possible topics are: the long awaited Rocketry, Anthropology, Crime Scene Investigation, and Shakespeare. We have to depend on our volunteers and time allotted.

Please plan on attending the GATE parent meeting on Tuesday, September 7 to discuss the program. I look forward to getting to know you and your students.

The Honors Core teachers (Ms. Rushton - 6th, Ms. Wackerman - 7th and myself, Ms. Squyres-McNally - 8th), as well as the mathematics department teachers are all interested in making this a special year for our GATE and Honors students. Ms. Coon, music and fine arts teacher, also supports the program and has many of our students in her classes. Actually, the entire staff appreciates and looks forward to working with you and your students in 2010-2011. Thank you for sharing your student with us!

I look forward to meeting you on Tuesday, September 7, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm at the Orland Unified School District Gifted and Talented Education parent and guardian's meeting. We are hoping to have the meeting in the new C. K. Price Middle School cafeteria. If that space is not available, we will meet in the Orland High School Media Center.
